European Defence Fund launched

Today the Commission launched a European Defence Fund to help Member States spend on security and defence more efficiently through common actions and thus reduce duplications and get better value for money. Announced by President Juncker in September 2016, and backed by the European Council in December 2016, the Fund will coordinate, supplement and amplify national investments in defence research, in the development of prototypes and in the acquisition of defence equipment and technology.
The European Structural and Investment Funds can also be used by the defence sector. In particular the European Regional and Development Fund can support investments into defence-related research and innovation activities.
