The entity known as Innovation and Development of Andalusia (IDEA) is the region’s development agency. Having supported some 17,000 innovation projects, IDEA fosters entrepreneurship, knowledge-based innovation, competitiveness, sustainability and cooperation with Andalusia’s scientific, technological and business stakeholders – many of which are located in Seville.
Andalusia’s defence and dual-use sector is well developed, with 120 companies and 12,000 workers. Though they comprise only 6.4% of the region’s industrial workforce, the sector generates 19 percent of Andalusia's manufacturing GDP and accounts for nearly 6% of the region’s exports. The sector’s activities are centered on: advanced materials, aeronautics & aerospace, cyber security, electronics, energy, health & bio-sciences, ICT, robotics and land, maritime and naval sectors.
IDEA is currently developing initiatives to promote more dual-use technologies across the region in collaboration with its national and EU interlocutors. It works closely with Spain’s Defence Ministry on smart specialisation strategies, for example, and is currently mapping the opportunities for expanding IDEA’s contacts internationally.
