The defence sector, together with the aeronautics, space and naval sectors is one of the 7 domains of excellence identified by the region SUD Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in its strategy for the regional economic development. In this region, the defence sector represents nearly 50,000 military and civilian jobs.
SUD Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur is the second largest French region active in the field of defence, just behind Ile de France, with its defence industry representing 15% of its total turnover of €6 billion. Defence in the region is strongly linked to the naval sector, due to the location of 1 of the 2 French arsenals in Toulon.
However, the regional ecosystem is expanding more and more to other sectors, in particular aeronautics and space. Specific expertise can be found in SUD Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in the fields of drones, robotics and embedded systems, in addition to specific technical fields necessary for the ecosystem (modelling, shipbuilding, logistics, etc.).
Its regional ecosystem is built around organisations covering the whole value chain, in particular due to the activities of 4 Clusters bringing together all the expertise related to aerospace and naval sectors: SAFE on security, aeronautics and space; Pôle Mer Méditerranée on maritime safety and security; Optitec on optics and imaging; and SCS Cluster on ICT and cybersecurity.
